Who puts the smile in Smiling Vines?
I’m Janine, and I'd like to be the first to welcome you to Smiling Vines! Current friends will tell you that I didn’t always like wine (gasp!!). I was a confirmed mixed-drink girl … gin & tonic and the occasional margarita were my go-to drinks. My husband, T.R. was a die-hard Coors Light drinker … no fancy craft beers for him! But time has a way of changing our views on many things.
Many of my friends were going on wine tours and seemed to be having an awful lot of fun. I finally tagged along on a couple of their excursions and found that there are a lot of different wines out there, and lo and behold, even a couple that I enjoyed! T.R. now also enjoys a nice range of wines, as well as having developed a taste for craft beers.
Since those early winery visits, I’ve found that although I don’t like ALL wines (who does??), my taste for wine has changed. Most people seem to start with sweet wines, which are easier to drink, and sometimes move on to dryer wines over time. Others prefer to stay with the sweet varietals. Personally, I'm a sucker for the dry wines, but also love the fruitiness of a Riesling that sits in the middle of the residual sugar scale, or the flowery essence of a good Traminette or Gewurztraminer. Any of those can be found on a scale from dry to sweet.
In the last couple of years, as we visited various wine trails many times, we began posting our trips on Facebook. In the days following our visits and postings, I would get comments from friends who saw the posts noting how much fun we seemed to be having, and how they wanted to visit some of the places we wrote about. I’ve always been told that if you’re going to write about something, you should choose something that you enjoy. Although I would never profess to be an expert on the subject, I thought it would be fun to share our thoughts on a larger platform. Our only request is that you accept all of our thoughts as purely our opinions, and nothing more. You may very well not like what we like, and that’s okay! Differences are what make the world go around, right? Our only purpose is to share with you the places where we had fun, met great people, and spread the word about our tastiest discorveries.
We hope you’ll check back with us regularly, and that we can keep you entertained and informed with our travels through wine country (or the wine & liquor store). You may not always agree with us, but hopefully you’ll have an open mind and try a few new things and visit a few new places. As I’ve found since my first foray into the wine tasting world, this industry includes many tasty wines, wonderful people with a passion for what they do, and beautiful vistas to tie it all together.
Lastly, we encourage you to share your thoughts with us by leaving a comment below any of our posts or by contacting us via email!
Come share a glass of wine and a smile with us!
